Hi, like the drills. On the 2nd drill, the short hop one, why does he bring his glove up over his head and drop his head down after fielding the ball? I think you were supposed to bring the glove up to your bellybutton.

Good drills but instead of bringing the glove straight up in the air after fielding the ball the emphasis should be on bringing it in towards your body. This has several advantages: “softer hands” (the ball is less likely to rebound out of the glove); better adjustment to bad hops; and, it serves to initiate the turning of the hips/shoulders for the throw to first base. Once a more advanced level is reached, the fielding and throwing motions become one continuous sequence.

Not sure I understand what the point is for ducking the head on the second drill. Please explain. Great videos BTW.

That is something the player’s coach emphasizes…Since it doesn’t seem to be messing up his fielding I let it slide.

I agree bringing the glove in would help to develop soft hands…His coach has him do this to emphasize keeping the head down during fielding.
